  • Hamjwk Tubui Kaimani: This includes the negotiation between the families through the marriage broker (Raibai) along with guardians. Raibai along with the boy’s parents, visits the girl’s home to choose her.

  • Koksungma: The girl’s parents demand the dowry. If the families agree to the dowry, then the families will fix the marriage date.

  • Dangdua: The family of the couple assembles at the bride’s home. A bell metal plate containing some cotton, durba (long grass), copper coin, sesame seeds, and soil is put in front of the parents to perform the rituals of ‘Dangdua’.

  • Koksungma: On this day, the bride has to bathe her parents and her would-be in-laws also. The bride has to wash the hands of all the elderly people after they have finished the feast.

  • Kuaitano: In this ceremony, women will cut betel leaves and nuts on the names of the bride and the groom and make the “Ulu” sound twisting their lips, three times for the bride and seven times for the groom.

  • Khum Phunugo: On the wedding day, the groom’s family goes to the bride’s home with jharies or water pots, palanquin, and musical instruments.



Marriage Procedure in Tripura

  • For the hassle-free marriage procedure, it is advisable to appoint an advocate.

  • The applicant needs to visit the office of SDM or collector officer of the state/ district. The applicant needs to obtain the form for notice of intended marriage.

  • After this, they need to fill out the application form and submit it along with all the required documents to the SDM.

  • The notice should be submitted in that state where one of the parties is a resident at least for 30 days before submitting the application.

  • After this, the notice should be published in the newspaper. It will also be put up by SDM.

  • After 30 days from the submission of the notice if no objection has been filed, then the couple needs to visit the registrar’s office on the specified day for the solemnization of marriage.

  • The couple along with the witnesses and the necessary documents should visit the registrar’s office on the date of registration.

  • After this, the marriage will be solemnized and the marriage certificate will be issued in some time.


Documents required for marriage registration in Tripura

  • There are several documents that need to be submitted for registration of marriage in the office of the registrar. These are:

  • The age proof of both the couples. It might be a class 10th certificate, valid passport, proof of birth, certificate of school leaving, etc.

  • The proof of residence of both the couple. It might be a rent agreement, a valid driving license, a valid passport, a voter’s ID, etc.

  • The proof of marriage. It may be wedding invitations, wedding photos, and passport-size photographs of the couple.

  • ID proof of witnesses. Be it an Aadhar Card and passport-size photos.


Eligibility for marriage registration in Tripura

  • Any couple in which any one of them is non–citizen is eligible. For this, either of the couple should be residents of Tripura.

  • People who are interested in special marriage are eligible for court marriage . They can be inter-religious couples.

  • The groom's age should be 21, while the bride's age should be 18.

  • Both couples should be of sound mind.

  • Both couples should not be already married.

  • They should not be in a prohibited relationship with each other.
